The Signs of Thoroughbred City

In late April, I ventured approximately 100 miles to Lexington, KY to tour Integrated Signs and interview them for the June issue’s architectural-signage coverage. As I often do when I travel, I brought my camera to document some of the Thoroughbred City’s unique signage.
As expected, establishments near the University of Kentucky’s campus in downtown Lexington often conveyed a sense of humor and whimsy. (Hughjassburgers? Only in a college town.) However, visitors enjoyed a decidedly different ambience at Keeneland, a horse-racing track on Lexington’s west side that only runs races six weeks of the year – three in April, and three in October.
Tens of thousands congregated to sip mint juleps and enjoy the elegance of this Bluegrass State tradition. Keeneland’s complement of refined, hunter-green and old-gold signage integrated nicely with a state-of-the-art electronic display that kept patrons informed of odds, scratches and results.
