The Sign Assn. of Canada (SAC) hosts its annual CONSAC tradeshow for the Canadian sign industry
every September in Ontario. This year’s September 25-26 show, at the International Centre in Mississauga, included, as has been true for more than 30 years, the Friday-night announcement of winners in the annual signage competition, which includes 12 categories. Twilight Signs & Neon (Bolton, ON), dominated the competition by winning one-third (four) of all of the Premier Awards. Its towering, electronic-message-center sign for Montreal’s Premium Outlets retail center also won the Best of Show designation.
Otherwise, eight different companies won first place in the other eight categories.
The judges were three sign-industry professionals. They collectively review all 150+ submissions for approximately four hours, and then determine first, second and third place for all categories based on the following criteria:
• Originality/Creativity: 0-4 points
• Materials: 0-4 points
• Appearance: 0-4 points
• Design Suitability: 0-4 points
• Bonus Point: 0-1 points
Maximum Score: 17 points
CONSAC also hosts two other sign-related competitions. For a new one, called the Creative Category Competition, participants are provided a sketch of an existing business, and then are given instructions to give it a fresh new look.
In addition, CONSAC includes a vehicle-graphic design competition, in which designers are given a specific brand of automobile, for which they then design a graphic.
