Optimism Precedes ISA Sign Expo

Electronic Digital Signage to be prominently showcased

As the sign industry begins to tentatively emerge from the clutches of recession, there are a lot of positive signs (with a few cautionary notes to slightly temper expectations) as the industry prepares to convene at this year’s ISA Sign Expo in Las Vegas. The event begins today with educational programs, with the tradeshow taking place April 4-6. Sold out exhibit space is a positive sign unto itself. “Sin City” is a significant attraction, but strong attendance forecasts can primarily be attributed to sales growth, gradually diminishing unemployment and, with more confidence from moving on firmer ground, eagerness among many signmakers, designers, specifiers and others to see industry trends firsthand.

On the show floor, the Dynamic Digital Signage Park, which will showcase electronic-digital signage (EDS) from 18 exhibitors (according to the Sign Expo website, as of March 27) will allow industry professionals to observe an aggregation of EDS products. Also, ISA has designed today as Dynamic Digital Signage Education Day. The program will include, among other programs, Alan Brawn’s presentation, “The Seven Key Elements of Dynamic Digital Signage’; Jonathan Brawn’s “Demonstrating Dynamic Digital Signage to the Customer”, and Melody Craigmyle “Partnerships for Success in Dynamic Digital Signage for the Sign Installer”. Whether the solution is an interior, LCD menuboard display, or a full-color, exterior LED messageboard spectacular, it’s evident these types of signs are viewed as the sign industry’s next frontier. Many (myself included) are curious to see how they’re received at the show.

As usual, the show floor will present myriad printer, material, lightsource and installation solutions. Although there is often “here today, gone tomorrow” attrition seen from year to year at the Sign Expo hopefully greater economic stability will contribute to greater success for more OEMs and supplies. More choices are always better in a free market.

Of course, we’ll be reporting about the Sign Expo’s happenings in future issues. But, after the show, we’d like to hear from you with your assessment on what was new and interesting at the show. Please feel free to contact us at signs@stmediagroup.com with your input.
