"I believe it is the largest boat wrap ever," said Image Monster owner Jed McDonough,as he surveyed the Quad Zeus, a 60-ft. Hatters GT power sportsfish boat in Charleston, S.C. Image Monster, a Wilmington, N.C-based, large-format print and graphic design studio, was asked by Charleston, SC-based Cummins Mercruiser Marine to wrap the boat in a custom design by graphic designer Zach Shaeffer, who utilized original drawings by renowned Wilmington marine artist Steve Goione.
The Quad Zeus convertible is powered by four Cummins MerCruiser Diesel QSC8.3-liter 600 HP engine/pod units.
Shaeffer attended Mercury boat races, where smaller vessels are painted with designs, which prompted him to envision a larger scale. When he approached Goione about his idea, Goione suggested a collaboration with Image Monster.
With Goione’s drawings of a game fish, Shaeffer created a layout that would be appropriate for the boat, then made a computerized template of the scene. The boat itself was carefully measured and photographed, and, to ensure accuracy, Shaeffer worked from a 5-ft. model of the boat to complete the template. The design phase took about a month and a half to complete. Once the template was approved, Image Monster used a Roland SJ1000 ecol-solvent printer, with Wasatch’s SoftRIP, to print the design on 54 in. x 150-ft., cast-vinyl sheets, protected with 3M 8515 overlaminate.
The panels were then taken to Charleston, where it took three men at Cranky Creative three days to wrap the boat. The boat is covered with two stylized Blue Marlins chasing four Mahi-Mahis.
