New Long Beach Dunkin’ Donuts Preserves Iconic Sign

It’s no secret how much we enjoy hearing about an historic sign’s preservation. It’s even more encouraging when a large conglomerate steps up and does so. Many in Long Beach, CA lamented the loss of The Original Grind, a coffee and doughnut shop that opened in Long Beach in the 1950s. And, many lamented the loss of the giant doughnut that served as its main identifier.

However, when Boston-based Dunkin’ Donuts opened a new story in Long Beach on December 9 as part of an effort to grow its West Coast footprint, the company opted to restore The Original Grind’s doughnut. Dan Almquist, the franchise’s owner, said the repair was a "six figure" project.
