Lonnie Stabler, a well-known sign-company owner and association member, as well as the mayor of Bryan, TX, sucuumbed to cancer on Monday, December 1, 2013 at Hospice Brazos Valley in Brazos. Lonnie was the owner of Stabler Sign Co. (founded in 1932) in Bryan, and he was the mayor of that city from from May 1995 until May 2001. He served on the City Council the four years prior to that.

In the sign industry, Lonnie represented custom-sign companies in the Southwest Region while serving on the Board of Directors for the Intl. Sign Assn. (2001-2003). He served as president of the Texas Sign Assn. from 1994-1995.

Recently, while serving as the chairman for Texas’ Electrical Sign Task Force, Lonnie was heavily involved with Texas House Bill 1352 and the parallel Senate Bill 803, which concerned electrical licensing for signs. His assessment of the situation was highlighted in Signs of the Times magazine’s June 2013 issue in the editorial on page 104.

Funeral services for Mayor Stabler will be held Thursday, December 5, at 11:00 a.m. at Central Baptist Church, 1991 FM 158, College Station. Interment will follow at the Bryan City Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 4, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Hillier Funeral Home, 2301 East 29th St., Bryan.
