Client
Guangzhou Vanke Real Estate Co. Ltd.

Developed by Vanke, China’s largest real-estate developer, Fish in the Garden is a mountain-resort property that features hillside, high-end retail, hotel and residential spaces. Lorenc+Yoo’s design package entails entry features, wayfinding, overall project branding and a fountain sculpture. Lorenc said the program features organic shapes, modern forms and integrated Chinese and English text. The directional signage comprises sculpted-granite pieces with subtle, natural-background patterns.

To create rustic ambience, Shenzhen Youking sheathed the logo and other sign elements in bronze, and hammered metal to create a weathered look for many elements. Lorenc said, “Flush sign fittings provide a subtle, modern contrast to the worn appearance.”

Client
Fox and Hounds Pub

Aldergrove, BC’s Fox and Hounds Pub enjoys a colorful “history”. The owners built the pub with timbers from the original Fox & Hounds pub in London, which was reportedly founded in 1812. Sawatzky helped the Paul family prepare to celebrate the original pub’s bicentennial in grand fashion with a signage and architectural-graphics program that carries a vital storytelling element throughout the establishment.

To create the program, he complemented Coastal Enterprises’ 30-lb. PrecisionBoard HDU, which he routed on the shop’s MultiCam 3000 CNC router, with carved, fiberglass-reinforced concrete. The signs and wall claddings brand and create ambience for the building façade, fireplaces, archways, bar fixtures and numerous other details. Sawatzky and his small crew handpainted all elements with Modern Masters’ acrylic metallic and themed-environment paints.

He worked on the project for approximately six months. Sawatzky said, “This project was a dream come true for me. I’ve always wanted to create a restaurant’s entire theme, from the front-door sign down to the beer taps.”
