FIRST PLACE (TIE)

For a wild-boar farm in the Outauouais region, near the Laurentian Mountains, Giroux created the boar’s head in Styrofoam expanded-polystyrene foam and covered it with Magic Smooth two-part epoxy and Magic Sculpt modeling material, which was covered with latex paint. The French name for boar was gilded with 23k gold.

FIRST PLACE (TIE)

Yarraman Estate Winery in Australia’s Upper Hunter region commissioned Danthonia to upgrade its signage. Danthonia designed this sophisticated, 3-D entry statement using SAi’s FlexiEXPERT software. The Avery Dennison carving and paint masks were plotted with Roland DGA Corporation’s CAMM-1 Pro vinyl cutter. The 54-sq.-ft., handcarved sign was gilded with palladium leaf and coated with Dulux Weathershield and Resene metallic finishes. The substrate is Sign Arts Products’ Sign•Foam3 HDU laminated to PVC with 3M adhesives. The posts are powdercoated aluminum with stainless-steel hardware.

SECOND PLACE

Asked to create a design that would express a “caring, supportive environment for small children,” Danthonia handcarved the cute kinkajous from Sign Arts Products’ Sign•Foam3 HDU. The sign panel is Sign•Foam3 laminated to a PVC backing with 3M adhesives. The hand-shaped, add-on letters were gilded with 23k goldleaf. Dulux Weathershield paints and Liquitex artist acrylics added the decorative colors. The posts are powdercoated aluminum with stainless-steel hardware.

THIRD PLACE

The Gingin Shire Council in Western Australia commissioned numerous, identical entry signs for this rural region and asked to include images of local plant life, including gum-tree blossoms and kangaroo paw, a symbolic plant for the aboriginal Yuen people. The project was designed with SAi’s FlexiEXPERT, and the Avery carving and paint masks were plotted using Roland DGA Corporation’s CAMM-1 Pro. The HDU sign panel is laminated to PVC backing and handpainted.
