FIRST PLACE

Danthonia Designs’ trademark handcarved, handpainted 3-D signs attracted the owner of a restaurant and boutique bed-and-breakfast. In order to convey that both establishments, the Bears Went Over the Mountain and the Contented Bear, were under the same management, Danthonia chose a “friendly bear” theme.

After having created the design with SAi’s FlexiExpert software, McKernan used Avery carving masks, having been plotted with a Roland DGA Corporation CAMM1 Pro, on Sign Arts Products’ Sign•Foam3 panels, which were laminated to a PVC backing with 3M adhesives. Dulux Weathershield paints added color, and 23k goldleaf highlighted the stars and incise-carved letters. To install the sign, Danthonia created a steel post and hanger, which are painted with a Lacnam, two-pack, industrial finish. The sign was installed after a baseplate with threaded rods was set in concrete and hardened in five days.

SECOND PLACE

This 35 x 75-in., double-sided sign emphasizes daily play helps children of all ages and abilities learn and grow together. SAi’s FlexiExpert software helped create the fun design. A Roland CAMM1 Pro plotter demarcated the mask on Sign Arts Products’ 18-lb. Sign•Foam 3. German hand chisels created the dimensional elements, and 23k goldleaf decorates the incise-carved letters. Benjamin Moore exterior-grade latex paint serves as a basecoat, and Liquitex© artists’ acrylics add the splashes of color.

THIRD PLACE

Heirloom-quality, handcrafted gardenware created with traditional wheel throwing and handcrafted techniques dovetails with Spring Valley Signs’ handpainted, hand-sculpted sign. This 36 x 48-in. double-sided sign comprises Sign Arts Products’ 18-lb. Sign•Foam 3 HDU, which was laminated to PVC sheets for structural strength.

Martina Weeks created the design with SAi’s FlexiExpert software and used a Roland CAMM1 Pro plotter to cut the mask. The incise-carved letters for “Goff Creek Pottery” were chiseled with German hand tools and decorated with 23k goldleaf, with Sherwin- Williams exterior-grade latex paint as the basecoat. The flowers are painted with Liquitex artists’ acrylics.
