FIRST PLACE

There’s nothing stodgy or demure about this distinctive, golf-course entry monument. Plummer fabricated the 4 x 8-ft., double-sided sign with Sign Arts Products’ Sign•Foam 3 HDU, which he laminated to PVC for added strength. After having coated the signface with Evercoat’s Euro-Fill automotive primer and Matthews acrylic-polyurethane paint, he decorated the raised letters and graphics with 1Shot® quick size and 23k goldleaf. He carved HDU caps to adorn the fluted-PVC posts and created the base structure with pressure-treated lumber and plywood attached to concrete-set, treated-wood posts. He covered the base surface with Eldorado Stone’s cast-stone veneer.

SECOND PLACE

Zank and his team “logged” copious hours creating this unique, 12-in.-thick x 10-ft. monument for a log-cabin resort community using Sign•Foam 15-lb. HDU. He distressed the horizontal panel by hacking with a hatchet, sandblasting and, finally, airbrushing them for added effect. Gold Leaf Letters handcrafted the letters and decorated them with 23½k goldleaf. Zank carved the bears with gouges, rasps and chisels, and applied them to the surface with blind-stud mounting. Greg’s Lawn & Landscaping (Sevierville) developed the complementary landscaping.

THIRD PLACE

In 2006, an investment group began transforming the Haystack Ski Area into a private, gated community, and they wisely understood signage should serve as an integral branding component. The 16 x 6, 4-ft. sign comprises MDO attached to its base by aluminum pins and construction glue. Wood & Wood cut the text from 1.5-in.-thick SignFoam HDU, painted it with exterior-grade, latex paint and adhered it to the laminated, painted signface. The logo atop the sign comprises a painted, aluminum cap powdercoated to emulate a stainless-steel finish and fastened with cutom, metal brackets.
