The Arizona Department of Transportation is hoping a new signage system will help alert drivers to wrong-way motorists along a stretch of Interstate 17 northwest of downtown Phoenix. According to PoliceOne.com, thermal cameras installed at 30-plus off-ramps along this particular area of I-17 can detect wrong-way drivers. Upon discovery, the signage system springs into action with eye-level “Wrong Way” signs complete with flashing red LED lights. Law enforcement officials can also enact warnings on nearby highway message boards and send alerts to drivers who have downloaded a mobile app.
